Sky News reports that Murrell admitted at a court hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh on Monday. A police representative described it as the SNP figure taking money from the party to “fund the luxurious lifestyle he craved but could not afford.”

Murrell is the estranged husband of Scotland's former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, and was for many years the SNP's director, roughly equivalent to party secretary.

"I am angry, hurt, sad and very upset," Sturgeon wrote on Instagram.

What punishment Murrell receives will be announced on June 23.
