A former university lecturer is convicted of defamation after calling the chairman of the Jewish Central Council, Aron Verständig, a murderer and accomplice to genocide, writes the website Doku.

The claims were made in two posts in the open Facebook group "Swedes who support Palestine" this spring.

The man was doing research in sociology, but reportedly lost his university positions after his statements.

He is sentenced to 50 daily fines of 70 SEK and must pay damages of 10,000 SEK to Verständig.

"I think it is gratifying that the district court ruled for defamation. It shows that there is a limit to what can be said about another person," Verständig said in a statement to Doku.
