Rasmussen was NATO secretary-general from 2009 to 2014. He now advises governments on security issues and, during a visit to Berlin, criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for his stance toward NATO.
"What we are witnessing right now is the dissolution of NATO," Rasmussen said, emphasizing that "Europe must stand on its own two feet and be able to defend itself alone."
Rasmussen says he wants to see a new alliance - a "coalition of the willing", where only those states that want to defend Europe should be members, including Ukraine. However, he wants NATO to still have an important role in defense.
