On Instagram, his family members write that Chrunak "has fallen asleep peacefully after a long illness. He fought his cancer bravely until the end."
Chrunak was a successful captain of the national swimming team between 1991 and 2000, during which the team's swimmers won 183 medals at the Olympics, World Championships and European Championships. He was then the sports director of the swimming association and later a swimming expert on television.
Hans Chrunak was an enormously important person for me personally and for Swedish swimming, says former swimming star Therese Alshammar to Expressen.
He was one of my most important youth coaches.
Hans Chrunak was also club director in ice hockey for Luleå HF from 2005 to 2007.
Chrunak was 77 years old.
