When the much-discussed trial ended in early September, Davis was not convicted of firing the fatal shots at Shakur in 1996, but of ordering the murder.

Prosecutors in the case have alleged that Shakur was murdered in a gang-related revenge attack. In the 1990s, Davis was the leader of the South Side Compton Crips - a loose alliance of gangs that controlled parts of Los Angeles.

The alleged motive for the murder was that Davis' nephew had been subjected to a humiliating beating by a rival gang, of which Tupac Shakur was a member, in front of cameras. Two and a half hours later, the rapper was shot dead in a drive-by shooting from a white Cadillac.

Sixty-three-year-old Davis has announced that he intends to appeal the verdict.
