In addition to the gold bars, the FBI seized $2 million in cash and about 35 luxury watches from the man's home in Virginia, court documents show.
The man had access to classified information in previous work at a U.S. intelligence agency.
He was arrested on May 19 and charged with theft of government funds. From November last year to March this year, he repeatedly requested “a significant amount of foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars in gold bullion for work-related expenses,” according to court documents.
The search was triggered after gold and cash were found to be missing from a storage space at his workplace.
