Former CAS judge says political arguments aren’t enough to bar Russia from Ice Hockey World Championship

Political arguments are not enough to exclude Russia from the Ice Hockey World Championship. That is why the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is allowing the country to compete.

The political arguments fail. CAS has not found any legal obstacles to Russia participating. There is nothing in the International Ice Hockey Federation's rules that would prohibit Russia from participating, Conny Jörneklint, a former CAS judge, tells Radiosporten.

CAS did not assess whether Russia should remain suspended because of its full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine. Instead, it assessed the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) arguments about safety, security and other circumstances.

These are the arguments that CAS ultimately assessed and found insufficient to exclude Russia from participation, Jörneklint says.
