Wedding has been on the FBI's list of most-wanted criminals in the United States and is accused of murder and cocaine trafficking, among other crimes. He has been compared to drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.
The handover was the result of coordination between authorities in the United States and Mexico, according to the U.S. ambassador to Mexico.
In 2010, Wedding was sentenced to a 48-month prison sentence for attempting to transport 24 kilograms of cocaine from the United States to Canada. After serving his sentence, he was extradited to Canada. There, he allegedly attempted to organize the transport of tons of drugs for the Sinaloa Cartel, which is "El Chapo's" organization.
Before he could be arrested, Wedding fled to Mexico. He is suspected of running his drug trafficking network in the country and is also accused of ordering the murders of several people.
Wedding was a snowboarder and competed for Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
At the end of last year, U.S. authorities increased the reward for information leading to Wedding's arrest to US$15 million, which corresponds to around 134 million SEK.
