The incident reportedly occurred at a railroad crossing without barriers.

Manninger belonged to Arsenal from 1997 to 2002. There, he mainly served as the second goalkeeper and was part of the team that won the Premier League title in 1998.

During his career, he also played for Italian clubs Juventus and Fiorentina, and was at Liverpool in the final year of his career. He was capped 33 times for Austria and was part of the country's squad for the 2008 European Championship.

"The news of Alex Manninger's passing touches us deeply. With him, football loses a special person," the Austrian Football Association wrote in a statement on X.
