At least 15 people have been confirmed dead in widespread forest fires in Chile, the government said Sunday afternoon. President Gabriel Boric has declared a state of emergency after 20,000 people were forced to flee their homes.

In total, the fire service is fighting 19 fires across the country, twelve of them in the Ñuble and Biobío regions south of the capital, Santiago.

It is unknown how many homes have been destroyed or whether anyone has died in the fires.

Southern and central Chile have been hit hard by forest fires in recent years.
