There are currently 10 major fires raging around the country, of which two in the northern parts and a further three in the central parts are considered the most alarming.
600 of the called-up firefighters have been deployed to try to extinguish a fire raging in a eucalyptus forest in the municipality of Arouca in northern Portugal.
It is this fire that we are now concentrating all our efforts and reinforcements on, said Mario Silvestre, head of the national authority for civil protection at a press conference.
A further hundred firefighters are trying to extinguish a fire near the town of Penamacor in the central parts, as well as a fire on a mountain near the northern border with Spain. Four Spanish aircraft have joined the effort during Monday.
According to local authorities, several of the fires are at risk of worsening due to the high temperatures in the coming days.
