More than 700 firefighters are battling the 1,500-hectare blaze, which is raging about 70 kilometres from Les Angles, where the third stage of this year's Tour de France will finish on Monday.

The fire has flared up again, all resources have been mobilised to get it under control, says Regnault de la Mothe, an official with the local authorities in the Pyrénées-Orientales area where the fire is raging.

Now there is a risk that the fire will make it impossible to stage the race. The final decision will be made on Sunday evening. If it is cancelled, it would be the first time in the 123-year history of the race that a forest fire has forced the cancellation of a stage.

After two stages, Dane Jonas Vingegaard leads.
