A forest fire broke out early on Saturday morning near Split in southern Croatia. In some villages, residents and tourists have been forced to evacuate.

The fire started in the area around Pisak and Marusici, about four miles from Split.

The rescue service initially stated that the fire was not under control and that the situation was "very serious". A large number of firefighters and two firefighting aircraft have been called in to the extinguishing work.

At least twelve houses have been destroyed in the fire, according to local authorities. The police are investigating the incident as arson. Just after lunchtime on Saturday, the rescue service seems to have begun to get the fire under control, according to local media. At the same time, reports are coming in that further fires have started in the area around Makarska.

According to the public service company HRT, there have been fires at 17 locations around the cities of Makarska and Omis along the Adriatic coast over the past two days.
