More and more foreign ships are being detained in Sweden because they are in poor condition.

In two years, the number of so-called use bans in Sweden has increased sharply. In 2023, the number was 12; in 2024 it was 23, and last year it was 27, the Swedish Transport Agency writes in a press release.

A prohibition on use means that the deficiencies are so serious that safety on board cannot be guaranteed. The ship is then not allowed to leave port until the deficiencies have been rectified.

"We see that the worrying trend of ships in Swedish waters being in increasingly poor condition is continuing," says Jonas Bjelfvenstam, Director General of the Swedish Transport Agency.

The ships that have been banned from operating fly different flags and are mostly cargo ships.
