Ahmadreza Djalali recently had contact with his wife, Vida Mehrannia, from inside the notorious prison. They spoke for about two minutes and the call was broken off several times.
"I have read the information that has appeared in the media that his wife has managed to get in touch with him. I am very grateful that she has," says Malmer Stenergard.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring his situation as best it can, she continues, but it is difficult to obtain verified information, partly because the internet is shut down in Iran.
Djalali is in a country at war, where we have difficulty obtaining accurate information. He is also in Evin Prison where there has been a lot of worrying information about how the situation has developed. In addition, he has a difficult health situation, so we are very concerned and will do everything we can to ensure that he can return home to his family.
Djalali was sentenced to death in 2017 for alleged espionage against Iran, but, according to the UN, he is arbitrarily detained.
