Jota and his brother died in a traffic accident on Thursday morning.
Paulo Meneses, former chairman of Jota's childhood club Paços de Ferreira, tells radio channel Antena 1:
This is something I still haven't been able to accept, it's too sad. Diogo was a unique person, not just on the pitch. He never forgot his origins. He was an incredible person.
"May you find strength in love"
Teammate in the Portuguese national team and world star Ronaldo writes on the platform X.
"It's incomprehensible. Just recently we were together in the national team, and you had just gotten married. To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish you all the strength in the world. I know that you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you"
Former national team player Pepe also writes on his Instagram:
"A premature and painful loss that makes us all poorer - as colleagues, as friends, and as football fans. In this moment of deep sorrow, I send my sincere condolences to their family, friends, and everyone who loved them. May you find strength in love and the memories you left behind. May you rest in peace."
"I will never forget you"
Rúben Neves, former teammate with Jota in Porto and in the Portuguese national team, has shared a picture on Instagram with the text.
"They say that we only lose someone when we forget someone. I will never forget you!"
Portugal's Prime Minister Luís Montenegro on X:
"Diogo Jota, an athlete who represented Portugal with honor. I extend my deepest condolences to his family. It's a sad day for football and for national and international sports."
