"Thank you FIFA for doing the right thing and righting a great injustice," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The International Football Association Board, FIFA, announced on Sunday afternoon, Swedish time, that the previously suspended Folarin Balogun will be allowed to play in the round of 16 against Belgium.
The announcement is a U-turn by FIFA.
According to the New York Times, it was Trump himself who picked up the phone and contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to have the suspension lifted.
Folarin Balogun received a red card after a punch in the round of 16 against Bosnia-Herzegovina, which according to the rule book means at least a one-match suspension.
FIFA also announced after the match that a team cannot appeal a red card or the subsequent suspension.
But now FIFA has lifted the suspension and is relying on an article in the regulations that gives the disciplinary body the right to postpone or completely remove the enforcement of a disciplinary sanction.
On its website, FIFA writes that the suspended suspension has a probationary period of one year and if Balogun commits a similar offence within that time frame, the suspension will be enforced.
The Belgian Football Association reacted with “surprise” to the decision to lift the suspension.
"The Belgian Football Federation is stunned by FIFA's decision to make suspended USA player Folarin Balogun eligible to play in the USA-Belgium match on Monday," a statement said.
They further write that they will "investigate all possible measures."
The USA will face Belgium on Tuesday night at 2:00 AM.
