The International Football Association Board, FIFA, announced on Sunday afternoon, Swedish time, that the previously suspended Folarin Balogun will be allowed to play in the round of 16 against Belgium.

The announcement is a U-turn by FIFA.

Folarin Balogun received a red card after a punch in the round of 16 against Bosnia-Herzegovina, which according to the rule book means at least a one-match suspension.

FIFA also announced after the match that a team cannot appeal a red card or the subsequent suspension.

But now The Athletic reports that FIFA has lifted the suspension and that it is relying on an article in the regulations that gives the disciplinary body the right to postpone the execution of a disciplinary sanction.

On its website, FIFA writes that the suspended suspension has a probationary period of one year and if Balogun commits a similar offense within that time frame, the suspension will be enforced.

The announcement is welcomed by US President Donald Trump.

"Thank you FIFA for doing the right thing and righting a great injustice," he writes on Truth Social.

The USA will face Belgium on Tuesday night at 2:00 AM.
