Flávio Bolsonaro says his father, Brazil's imprisoned ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, has named him his heir in politics.

In practice, this means that Flávio Bolsonaro, 44-year-old senator, is opening up to run in the next presidential election.

Right-wing radical Jair Bolsonaro was recently sentenced to 27 years in prison for trying to stage a coup after losing the 2022 election.

"It is with a great sense of responsibility that I confirm Jair Messias Bolsonaro's decision to entrust me with the mission of continuing our national project," the son writes on X.

The presidential election will be held in October next year. If he runs, Flávio Bolsonaro will face a number of conservative candidates as well as the incumbent leftist president, 80-year-old Lula da Silva, who has signaled that he intends to seek another term.

70-year-old Jair Bolsonaro was president 2019–2023.
