Even before the election, most indications pointed to a second round of voting between the two leading candidates, incumbent President Lula da Silva and challenger Flavio Bolsonaro. Opinion polls had shown a close race.
When the results came in on Monday night, Swedish time, the polls were right.
Right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro has received 47.24 percent of the vote, with 98.8 percent of votes counted, while Lula stands at 44.91 percent.
As neither candidate received more than 50 percent, they will face each other in a second round of voting on October 25.
