At a party convention in São Paulo on Saturday, the Liberal Party nominated 45-year-old Flávio Bolsonaro as its candidate for the presidential election in October. Flávio maintained the same far-right nationalist tone as Jair when he thanked the party for its support.

In connection with the convention, Argentina's controversial leader Javier Milei said that he supports Bolsonaro's right-wing candidacy and attacked the incumbent left-wing president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Jair Bolsonaro is barred from running in the election after being sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempting to stage a coup d'état. For health reasons, he is serving his sentence under house arrest.
