The reigning champions Florida took hold early – and kept it. The home team Carolina suffered a stinging 2-5 loss in the first Stanley Cup semifinal.

Carter Verhaeghe and Aaron Ekblad scored two crucial goals in the first period for their Florida, which then dominated the rest of the match.

Carolina's Sebastian Aho got a goal in the end of the first period, but the team could not defend themselves when Florida added more.

Swedish star defender Gustav Forsling made an assist in the third period when Eetu Luostarinen scored the 5-1 goal for Florida. Carolina's Jackson Blake reduced to 5-2 a little more than a minute later, but more than that the home team could not manage.

The win means that Florida takes the lead with 1-0 in the match series, which is played in best of seven. The next match is played on Friday night, Swedish time.

In the other semifinal, Dallas will face Edmonton.
