It's an honor to return to the Marvel world. They wanted me back, the fans wanted it, it's something I don't take lightly. When you feel welcome, you get confidence, says the British actress.
In "Thunderbolts", Yelena teams up with, among others, Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and Red Guardian (David Harbour) to save the world. It's a collection of superheroes who aren't as easy to like as others in previous films.
But Florence Pugh means that they have other advantages.
They may not be easy to like, but with their flaws and shortcomings, they're easy to relate to. Yelena has lived a bizarre life, she has lost her sister. It was incredibly fun to get the opportunity to play her again.
Doing her own stunt
The film begins with Pugh as Yelena jumping from the roof of a skyscraper. And yes, it's her doing it, not a stuntwoman. Time to become a new Tom Cruise? Pugh laughs.
No one can compete with Tom Cruise. He's the king.
She tells us that the stunt scene was on the first page of the script and that despite her own fear of heights, she decided to do it herself.
It was dark, it was scary, it was fantastic. I said I wanted to do the scene myself, I talked to friends about it, told them about my fear of heights. I talked to the stunt team about how I would make sure everything was safe so I wouldn't risk dying. There was a lot of preparation. And then I did it.
"It's scary"
Pugh thinks that working on "Thunderbolts" was made easier by the fact that director Jake Schreier was very open to collaboration.
We rehearsed for several weeks before filming began. We went through the scenes, there were no problems if we came up with comments on, for example, lines we wanted to change.
"Wouldn't it be fantastic if a bunch of superheroes took care of the problems in the world today?" It's Pugh who asks the question. She answers herself:
It's an extremely sensitive time. What we primarily need now is tenderness, but it's scary right now. It's possible to make changes, but we're all so isolated.
