Several subway lines were forced to close after platforms were flooded and in several places, cars and buses were stranded on flooded roads. New Jersey's governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency and advised people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
TV footage from CBS News shows flooded roads and dramatic rescue efforts in the state of New Jersey.
New York's rescue service wrote on the platform X that parts of the city and the Hudson River had been affected by flooding. A video published on social media shows how water is pouring into a subway station on Manhattan and filling the platform with water.
All departures from the airports JFK, La Guardia and Newark were temporarily suspended, which caused major delays in air traffic.
Later in the night, the precipitation decreased and the water has started to recede.
"It looks like the worst of the storm is over and fortunately, everyone is safe", writes New Jersey's mayor Jonathan M Busch on social media.
