The tourist resort is planned to be built in Zvernec on the mainland and the nearby island of Sazan in the Adriatic Sea. Protesters say the construction threatens flamingos and other species that nest in nearby protected wetlands.

"We want to see a halt to construction," Joni Vorpsi, an ecologist at Albania's bird protection organization, told the BBC.

A major investor is Jared Kushner, who, through his company Affinity Partners, has been welcomed by Albania's social democratic Prime Minister Edi Rama.

The protesters have joined opposition activists demanding the resignation of Rama, who is accused of corruption.
