On average, the interest rate on new agreements with binding periods of between 1 and 5 years was 2.99 percent in May, down from 3.14 percent in April.
"For the interest binding periods over one year, it is the first time since January 2025 that mortgage rates are falling", says Tobias Björling, economist at SCB, in a press release.
The variable interest rates are also falling, and they have been doing so for a longer period, even if the decline has been slower in the last half year. The average interest rate for variable housing loans was 3.06 percent in May compared to 3.15 percent in April 2025.
The proportion of households with variable mortgage interest rates was 71 percent in May, unchanged compared to April.
