Five German mountaineers are believed to have died in an avalanche accident in northern Italy, reports the German news agency DPA.

Three of the victims have been found. The other two are missing, but Italian rescue services tell DPA that they cannot have survived the accident.

Two people who were climbing in a group with the two missing people have been found alive. They have been flown to hospital by ambulance helicopter, reports the Austrian Der Standard .

The search for the missing two has been suspended due to darkness but will resume on Sunday.

The mountaineers were on their way up the mountain Cima Vertana (Vertainspitze) in the Ortler massif northeast of Bormio in South Tyrol when the avalanche struck on Saturday afternoon.
