An explosion in a mosque in the Syrian city of Homs on the border with Lebanon has killed at least eight people. Another eighteen were injured, according to authorities.

The explosion occurred inside the Imam Ali Bin Abi Talib Mosque in the Wadi al-Dahab district, the state-run Syrian news agency Sana reported. It took place in the Alawite areas of the city.

Preliminary information from the investigation indicates that explosives have been placed inside the mosque, reports Sana.

“Syria stands firm in its position to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” the Foreign Ministry commented. Local authorities condemned the incident.

A group of militant Islamists claims responsibility for the attack.
