Five killed after embankment collapses onto tents in Gaza amid heavy rain

Five people - three children and two women - have died in Gaza after an earthen embankment collapsed onto tents during heavy rain.

According to Mahmud Bassal, a civil defense spokesman in the area, the accident occurred when an earthen embankment collapsed onto tents at a camp for displaced people in central Gaza.

Rescue workers continue to search for missing people, he said.

The severe storm moved in on Saturday and caused flooding, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless, according to a statement from the Hamas government's communications unit.

In the war that followed the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, large parts of Gaza were destroyed by extensive Israeli shelling, which is why most of the population now lives in tents or other forms of makeshift housing.
