The organisers, the International Canoe Federation and the International Rowing Federation have approved the Fitzroy River as a competition venue for canoeing and rowing events during the Games.

Thousands of signatures were collected to move the races away from the frequently flooded, fast-flowing river.

An investigation into the river's suitability as a competition venue has now concluded that it can provide fair competition conditions. The investigation did not include any analysis of the safety risk posed by saltwater crocodiles that are occasionally sighted in the river.

Organisers have previously said that there are protocols for how any crocodile sightings should be handled.
