Until now, the world championships in the Olympic sports under the FIS umbrella have been held every two years. However, in future, FIS plans to increase the frequency and organise world championships every year that is not an Olympic year.
This applies to Nordic skiing (cross-country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined), alpine skiing and freestyle sports including snowboarding.
"The FIS board has agreed to increase the frequency of the world championships so that they will be arranged not only in odd years, but also in all even years when there are no Olympics," FIS writes in a press release.
The idea is that the change will come into effect from 2032, but FIS is also opening up the possibility of starting the annual world championships as early as 2028.
