The proposal comes from the Italian Winter Sports Federation (Fisi), according to the minutes of the FIS autumn meeting, which was recently held in Geneva, Switzerland.
The proposal is based partly on FIS's efforts to increase interest in cross-country skiing and partly on the challenges the sport faces as a result of global warming.
"The issue requires further analysis to assess the potential from a sporting, commercial and media perspective," FIS writes in the meeting minutes.
The 2027–28 season is mentioned as a possible starting point for roller skiing in the World Cup, if the proposal gets the green light.
