Production subsidies were introduced to make it profitable to locate film or television productions in Sweden instead of abroad. Under the previous regulation, the subsidy was distributed to the companies that registered first, and in 2023 Dagens Nyheter reported that 100 million ran out in just 23 minutes.
According to the new regulation, support will be given based on the applicants' eligibility, the government writes in a press release.
The Film Institute will take over responsibility for the distribution at the turn of the year.
Minister of Culture Parisa Liljestrand (M) described the previous way of distributing the money as "like a lottery" with tax funds.
