Brazilian President Lula da Silva was present when the single-seat Gripen E was unveiled during a ceremony that took place at the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer's factory in the state of São Paulo.
"We are extremely proud of what we have achieved side by side with our Brazilian partners," said Saab President and CEO Micael Johansson in a press release.
"The rollout of the first Gripen manufactured in Brazil represents another important milestone in the strategic cooperation between Brazil and Sweden," he continued.
In 2014, Saab was awarded a contract to deliver 36 Gripen aircraft – 28 Gripen E and eight two-seat Gripen F – to the Brazilian Air Force. 15 of these aircraft will be built by Embraer.
