The first emergency stocks for grain in Sweden will now begin to be established in the north.

The Swedish Board of Agriculture initiates on October 15 a procurement for Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Västernorrland and Jämtland. The Minister for Civil Defence, Carl-Oskar Bohlin (The Moderate Party), emphasizes that northern Sweden is particularly prioritized for total defence.

”It is no coincidence that it is here that the first steps are taken towards the establishment of emergency stores for grain, which fundamentally is about the population being able to put food on the table even in difficult times”, he states in a press release.

Grain will be stored in so-called working stores by the state buying a certain amount from companies that already handle grain today. The amount that the state has purchased should always be available.

The Swedish Board of Agriculture assesses that the storage in northern Sweden can take place during the spring.

”The long-term goal is that there should be emergency stores throughout the country, partly of grain that can become food on the plate, partly of input goods that ensure we can maintain our domestic production”, says the Minister for Rural Affairs Peter Kullgren (KD) in the press release.
