American Airlines' flight from Miami, Florida, to the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, departed at 4:25 p.m. local time in Sweden and landed at 7:18 p.m. local time in Sweden.
Most on board fell into two groups: journalists and U.S. government officials who were to meet with Venezuelan colleagues - which would have been impossible just a few months ago.
U.S. military forces captured leftist leader Nicolás Maduro in Caracas in early January. The countries have since resumed political, diplomatic and economic relations.
Around 1.2 million Venezuelans live in the United States, and Washington's goal is, among other things, to encourage more U.S. companies to be present in the country - which has enormous oil reserves.
