The Work Environment Authority's tightened requirements for breathing masks may force firefighters to shave off their beards, reports P4 Jönköping. Right now, it is being checked that the rescue service's breathing masks are completely airtight to meet the new requirements.
Jerker Sturedahl, operational manager for the rescue service in Jönköping municipality, says to the radio that beards risk hindering the face masks from holding tight against the face.
It is a concern and a consideration among both us and the staff on how we will handle the beard's being or not being.
A potential ban, on the other hand, arouses emotions and Jerker Sturedahl says to the channel that it could make the already difficult recruitment of part-time staff more difficult.
