A severe fire broke out in a row house area in Upplands Bro municipality north of Stockholm on Friday morning. At least eight apartments were totally destroyed.

After an extensive rescue effort, the fire is under control, the rescue service announces at lunchtime on Friday.

The containment lines are holding and we have started to scale down a bit, says Roger Serndal, lead operator at the rescue service.

A row of houses was burned to the ground and the fire spread to a nearby row, where an apartment was damaged. Several people were evacuated.

I think they have started letting people go home already, says Serndal.

The rescue service had more than 20 units from around ten stations on site to fight the fire. No one is reported to have been injured, but the material damage is extensive. The municipality went into emergency mode and a school was temporarily closed.

There was thick smoke and you could feel directly in the air that it was serious. The whole neighborhood came out and I think everyone was equally shocked. There were many who cried and were very upset, said one who lives nearby to Dagens Nyheter.

The fire is believed to have started on a patio, but it is unclear how. The alarm came at 05.49. The police have launched a preliminary investigation into arson to investigate the circumstances.

Sometimes it's more of a formality, says Stockholm police spokesperson Anna Westberg about the crime classification.
