The alarm was raised after a violent explosion was heard from the factory, between the towns of Colleferro and Artena outside Rome, Rai reports.
Rescue services responded to fight the fire. No injuries or deaths were reported.
According to the fire service, the fire and subsequent explosion occurred in a production and storage facility for explosives and ammunition.
