Stenberg died on Tuesday morning, the family announced.
"Thank you to all of you who have been in her life and who have loved her, laughed with her, worked with her and been inspired by her," Stenberg's family writes on Facebook, according to Hufvudstadsbladet .
Stenberg was born in Lappträsk, Finland, in 1938 and first worked at Lilla Teatern in Helsinki, before moving to Stockholm to work at the Royal Dramatic Theatre. She later became theatre director for Folkteatern in Gothenburg and chief producer for Riksteatern.
At Riksteatern, Stenberg collaborated with Lars Norén and produced the controversial play “7:3”, with long-term prisoners in the cast. Among them was Tony Olsson - who, the day after the final performance in May 1999, absconded from his leave, robbed a bank and took part in the police murders in Malexander.
She was 88 years old.
