It was in May that Niskanen sought treatment for a mole on his foot. After examinations, it became clear that the skier had been diagnosed with melanoma in its early stages, and two operations were expected.
“The surgical area was in a challenging location, especially since my foot is my tool,” Niskanen says in the press release .
The 34-year-old has therefore not participated in any training camps, and will also miss the Finnish cross-country team in early autumn. But Niskanen says the situation is under control and that he has been training at home on his own.
“I am grateful that I got it checked out in time, received fantastic care, and that I can continue my normal life and work,” says Niskanen.
