According to a press release, the project is run by the limited company Causabon, which was founded by Heikki Penttilä, former chairman of the major club Tappara.
The new league would initially consist of 10-12 teams and start as early as autumn 2026.
The current FM league consists of 16 clubs.
Behind the scenes in the FM league, a tough power struggle has been going on for several months. Those who want to break away believe that the competitiveness of the Finnish league must be increased.
"Finnish ice hockey has fallen behind the European top leagues in many areas. We need to raise the level, and it must happen quickly", says Penttilä in the press release according to Swedish Yle.
Discussions about the new league will begin immediately. The current FM league is also working on a new series reform that will be clubbed at the general meeting in November.
According to Eliteprospects' compilation, 43 Swedish players are playing in the FM league this season and Rikard Grönborg, who returns as Tre Kronor's national team captain next season, is the coach for Tappara, champion three years in a row between 2022 and 2024.
