Finland has initiated "confidential" discussions with France, according to a joint press release from the Presidential Office and the Ministry of Defence in Helsinki.

With Finland's accession, all Nordic countries except Iceland are included in the French nuclear weapons initiative, which aims to strengthen European defence and reduce dependence on the United States.

"Finland's accession to the initiative will significantly intensify bilateral defence cooperation between our countries and strengthen Finland's security," Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen says in the press release.

Sweden held its first meeting with France back in April.
