Finnish ice hockey is in shock after the women's junior team was eliminated from Group A at the World Championships for the first time in history. "I am speechless. A terrible moment for everyone," says national team captain Mira Kuisma, according to Swedish Yle.

Finland lost the relegation match against Hungary in the Women's Junior World Championship (U18) 5–7 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Finland has played at A-level in the Junior World Championships since the tournament began in 2008 and has won bronze three times, most recently in 2022.

However, this championship mostly went wrong and there were three straight losses in the group stage, which meant a relegation play-off.

At senior level, Finland's women have long been the biggest challengers to Canada and the USA, who are in a class of their own.

Sweden will play the bronze medal match in the Junior World Championship against the Czech Republic on Sunday evening, and on Monday night Canada and the USA will meet in the final.
