With a large majority – 157 yes against 18 no – Finland's parliament voted today to leave the treaty, writes the public service company Yle.

Finland and Europe must take all measures to strengthen our deterrent capability and defense capability. Individually and in Nato, said Prime Minister Petteri Orpo when the issue of withdrawing began to be debated in April.

The Ottawa treaty prohibits the storage, production, sale and use of personal mines. 164 countries and areas have signed the treaty, but not among others China, Russia and the USA.

In March, the Baltic Nato countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania also announced that they want to leave the treaty as a consequence of Russia's warfare in Ukraine.
