The Nashville star is a notorious goal scorer in NHL, but in the national team he has been hit by a drought.
He went point-less from the three matches in Four Nations in February and is goal-less in the World Championship.
In Friday evening's 4–0 win over Slovenia, Forsberg – the World Championship gold goal scorer in 2018 – broke the point drought in the home championship.
But an assist point after the chances he worked out – it was a meager dividend.
"It doesn't matter"
Especially for a player who has averaged almost a point per match in recent years in NHL.
It doesn't matter who scores the goal. Elias (Lindholm) scored three today, maybe next match it's "Mickis" (Mikael Backlund) or (Simon) Edvinsson. Our line creates a lot and we get a dividend with Elias scoring, says he.
Forsberg's line companion Elias Lindholm scored a hat-trick and together with center Mikael Backlund, the trio created masses of chances.
"Will come"
Hat-trick scorer Lindholm believes that Forsberg will soon get a dividend.
He has some opportunities, but it will come. I told him today to shoot a lot and he shot a bunch of shots. If it continues, it will loosen up tomorrow, says Lindholm about Saturday's match against France.
Forsberg was a post hit away from breaking the goal drought. Then he would have fooled Slovenia's goalkeeper Lukas Horak and would only have lifted the puck into the goal.
What do you feel there – that it's some kind of magic?
It's clear that it would have been nice to see it go in, but it wasn't needed today, so hopefully it will come later, says he and laughs.
Just to laugh at the misery?
Yes, it becomes like that, you fool the goalkeeper and think you need to put it up, but I would have put it after the ice. But it's hard to know beforehand, says he.
With 16 shots on goal so far in the tournament, he is tied for third in the Swedish shooting league.
But still goal-less.
