Clashes reportedly took place in recent days in Tsemlet in the western part of the region, a source told AFP. The area has previously been claimed by forces from the neighboring Amhara region.
The situation appears to be worsening, and flights to and from the region have been canceled, according to a security source.
Militias in Tigray fought a devastating war against the country's central government in 2020–2022, during which around 600,000 people are estimated to have been killed. Relations between Addis Ababa and other regions in the country remain very tense.
