FIFA to Review Automatic Red-Card Suspensions After Balogun World Cup Controversy

FIFA is to review whether automatic suspensions for red cards can be overturned, following the high-profile Balogun controversy at the World Cup.

The FIFA International Football Association Board is holding a meeting on Thursday, and one item on the agenda is a review of the rules on lifting automatic suspensions after red cards.

The Athletic has seen documents outlining a new proposal.

At this summer's World Cup in the United States, American striker Florian Balogun was sent off for a foul during the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. A red card normally leads to an automatic suspension for the next match, but FIFA's disciplinary committee overturned the ban, allowing Balogun to play in the round of 16 against Belgium. The USA lost 1–4.

US President Donald Trump said he had personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino and asked FIFA to reconsider Balogun's suspension. Infantino says FIFA's disciplinary committee made the decision without his involvement.
