FIFA Fines Spain for Islamophobic Chants by Fans at Egypt Friendly

FIFA rejects Spain’s appeal and fines the newly crowned world champion, among other penalties, after Spanish fans chanted Islamophobic chants during an international match against Egypt.

The Spanish Football Federation will be fined the equivalent of almost 200,000 kronor for incidents that occurred during the friendly match in Barcelona on March 31. In addition, Spain will be required to impose audience restrictions the next time it plays a friendly at home. A section corresponding to 15 percent of the stadium's capacity must be kept closed or filled with, for example, "families, students or organizations working against discrimination," according to FIFA.

"Using religion to mock people makes you appear intolerant and racist," Spanish star Lamine Yamal, who is Muslim, wrote on his Instagram account after the match.
