Justice was served, Fifa said in a statement.
According to Ifab, VAR review was used incorrectly in two situations during the World Cup, but the most notable was when Embolo received his second yellow card in the quarter-final against Argentina.
The second situation was a yellow card for Paraguay's Miguel Almiron in the group stage against the USA.
In both cases, the "mistaken identity" rule was invoked to obtain a video review, but according to Ifab, the rule may only be used if it is suspected that the wrong player has been cautioned.
In the situations in question, the decision was changed - the opponent's yellow card was cancelled and Embolo and Almiron were cautioned for filming.
