The now-defunct plans to sell parts of, among other things, the World Cup were met with massive criticism and were the starting point for the storm of criticism against Infantino.
Several influential bodies in the football world have turned against the president, including Uefa, and demanded his resignation. But many also support him. In its statement, Fifa says it welcomes the investigation but that recent reporting has contained errors.
"Speculation and innuendo should not be presented as fact, and repetition does not make an accusation true," it says.
The statement comes after The Telegraph reported that Uefa allegedly paid millions in severance pay to a woman who allegedly had an affair with Infantino when he was general secretary there.
The woman was reportedly promoted several times within Uefa in a short period of time and given more pay. Uefa's then-president Michel Platini is said to have confronted Infantino about the relationship, and the decision was then made that she would leave the job.
Infantino has denied the allegations about the affair.
Uefa has confirmed that a payment was made to the woman at the time but claims that it was for training, among other things.
